  2. 1. INTRODUCTORY AND SETUP NOTES
  3. -----------------------------------

  5. The Woodward Portrait Explorer on CD-ROM program must be installed on to your hard disc before it can be run.  This is because essential shared system files must be made available to Windows.  However, the data files which the program uses always reside on the CD-ROM.

  7. Before installing the CD-ROM please read the licence agreement in the accompanying booklet and installer, taking special notice of the copyright restrictions which apply.

  9. To install The Woodward Portrait Explorer on CD-ROM:
  10.  
  11.     1.  Turn on your computer, and turn on your CD-ROM drive if necessary.
  12.  
  13.     2.  Place the CD-ROM into the drive (printed side up).  Wait a few seconds until the CD-ROM drive's "busy" light switches off. The installer should run automatically; if it does not: Exit all programs, then click on the "Start" button and choose "Run...". Type D:\SETUP and click the "OK" button. (If your CD-ROM is not connected to drive D, please replace this with the letter of your CD-ROM drive.)

  15.     3.  Follow the instructions presented to you by the SETUP program; you may need to restart your computer.

  17.     4.  When the SETUP program has finished, click on the "Start" button, click on the "Programs" sub-menu, and a new "National Portrait Gallery" sub-menu should be present. Choose this, and then choose the "Woodward Portrait Explorer" menu item.

  19.     When the program starts up it displays a copyright message. Read it and, if you do not agree with these terms, you may not install the CD-ROM and should promptly return the package and all accompanying materials for a full refund. If you agree with the terms, click OK. It will then display the main contents panel; click one of the buttons to begin.

  21.     To run The Woodward Portrait Explorer on CD-ROM again, simply place the CD-ROM in the drive or repeat step 4 above. You do not need to run SETUP again.

  24. 2. MACHINE SPECIFICATION AND CONFIGURATION

  27. To correctly run the Portrait Explorer program, you need:
  28.  
  29.     * Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 95/98/NT4/2000 or later; or Apple(r) MacOS 7.0 or later.
  30.     * Up to 20 MB available hard disk space (for Windows(r)); up to 10 MB available hard disk space (for Macintosh(r))
  31.     * 16 MB of RAM (for Windows(r) 95/98, or Macintosh(r)); 32 MB of RAM (for Windows(r) NT4/2000)
  32.     * CD-ROM drive
  33.     * VGA or 13" (640x480) + 256 colour display. A 32,000 colour display or better is recommended for optimum image quality.
  34.     * QuickTime(r) 4.0 or later (included on CD-ROM).

  37. 3. LOW MEMORY PROBLEMS

  40. If the program displays "Out of Memory" errors, then it does not have enough free main memory in order to function correctly.  Shut down other applications in order to make more memory available.

  42. If you are running Windows 95, try making more disk space available. See the Windows 95 User's Guide or Help files for more information.

  45. 4. CD-ROM PROBLEMS

  48. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not remove the CD-ROM while the Portrait Explorer program is running.

If the Portrait Explorer program cannot find the data files that it needs from the CD-ROM, then it will display a dialog box prompting you to ensure that the correct disc is inserted into the drive, and asking you to tell it the drive letter of the CD-ROM device. The drive letter will usually be D, but on some systems it may be higher (E, F, G...); it is highly unlikely that the CD-ROM drive will be configured as A, B, or C drives.

The program will remember the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and should not have to prompt you for it again.  It will have to prompt you if you insert the wrong compact disc into the drive, if the drive is manually re-configured to a different drive letter, if no disc is inserted when the program is run, or if you run the program too soon after inserting the disc (allow a few seconds for the drive to recognise the disc).

  54. If the program does not seem able to read the disc, do the following:-
  55.     * if the CD-ROM drive is external to the PC, ensure that it is switched on, and correctly connected to the PC
  56.     * ensure that the surface of the disc is dust and dirt free
  57.     * use the Windows Explorer to try and access data on the disc (this program is useful for finding out the correct drive letter of the CD-ROM device)

  60. 5.  VIDEO DISPLAY PROBLEMS

  63. The Portrait Explorer program requires a screen that is set up with a minimum of 256 colours.  However, in order to get the full benefits of viewing the enlarged pictures, it is highly recommended that you run the computer in a screen mode that affords thousands or millions of colours - known variously as:-
  64.     * 16-bit screen mode
  65.     * 65,536 colours
  66.     * thousands of colours
  67.     * 32K colours
  68.     * 64K colours
  69.     * 24-bit screen mode
  70.     * 32-bit screen mode
  71.     * millions of colours
  72.  
  73. To view / change the current screen mode, use the "Settings" tab of the "Display Properties" control panel (Settings tab). To access the "Display Properties", run the "Display" control panel; alternatively, right-click anywhere on the Desktop area, and then select the "Properties..." menu item.

  76. 6. KEYBOARD EQUIVALENTS

  79. Below is a list of keyboard equivalents supported in the Portrait Explorer program which will help you navigate through the product, and perform certain tasks more quickly.

  81.     Ctrl + F = Find
  82.     Ctrl + G = Find again
  83.     Ctrl + P = Print
  84.     Ctrl + C = Copy text to clipboard
  85.     Ctrl +  I = Bring Image Windows to the front
  86.     Ctrl + B = Add Bookmark

  88. You can also assign keyboard equivalents to up to nine of the bookmarks. you create.

  91. 7. TECHNICAL SUPPORT

  94. If you experience problems running the Portrait Explorer on CD-ROM, consult the notes above, and the documentation that came with your computer.  If you still cannot fix the problem, then please do the following:-

  96.     * Write down a full description of the problem.
  97.  
  98.     * Also write down the computer name and model, the operating system (e.g. Windows 95 or Windows ME), details of the CD-ROM drive (if available) plus any other relevant information (e.g. details of the printer, if you are experiencing a problem with printing).
